Minimum Qualifications: Any combination of education and experience equivalent to graduation from a four-year college or university accredited by the Accreditation Board of Engineering and Technologies with a bachelor’s degree in the appropriate engineering or architecture field; plus five years of progressively responsible professional experience in the appropriate engineering or architectural field.
Special Requirements: The appointee to this position will be required to complete a criminal background check to the satisfaction of the employer. Possession of a valid Virginia Professional Engineer (PE) or Architect (RA) license. An individual who possesses a valid Professional Engineer or Architect license in another state will be granted temporary exemption to this requirement pending the Board of Architects decision regarding that individual’s application for reciprocity. Possession of a valid Erosion and Sediment Control Combined Administrator certification within 18 months of appointment.
Preferred Qualifications: Demonstrated ability to provide effective leadership of staff and work collaboratively with stakeholders. Experience creating process improvement and establishing policy. Demonstrated ability to set staff expectations and guide decision making for a diverse staff of professional and field/inspection personnel engaged in land development processes, including interpretation of federal, state, and county laws and regulations related to site work. Strong negotiation and conflict resolution skills. Outstanding oral and written communication skills.
The Engineer V is a leadership position reporting to the Director of Site Development and Inspections Division, Land Development Services. Supervises and manages Engineers and Supervising Engineer Inspectors responsible for plan review and approval of complex developments, field compliance with applicable codes and ordinances, including site plan, grading plans, Subdivision plans, public improvement plans, record plats and preliminary plans and other related submissions. Ensures code requirements and ordinances have been correctly and consistently interpreted and applied within the branch and across the division. Monitors review timeframes and confirms they are in compliance with local and state mandates and agency goals and standards. Promotes teamwork among internal and external staff, develops and implements a project management approach to the review and inspection process through project completion. Acts as director in his/her absence. Works collaboratively with other county, local and state agencies to coordinate field and plan issues and provides technical support to these agencies, including the Fairfax County Board of Supervisors and members of the development industry.
